Defining the Roles

Tank

Tank

Tanks are the front line and the protectors of any composition. These heroes have a primary function to protect the weaker heroes such as melee and ranged assassins. They accomplish this in a variety of ways, some more direct than others. They have much bigger health pools and often have ways to mitigate damage entirely. There are 13 tanks currently in Heroes of the Storm.

Bruiser

Bruisers are very robust heroes. They focus on dealing damage and surviving. They aren’t as flimsy as their Assassin counterparts and often have abilities to help them restore health. The ideal candidate is able to be thrown into a lane by themselves and survive while dealing decent damage. This group is the second most populated group with 17 heroes.

Melee Assassin

These heroes are similar to bruisers except they are much more fragile. Their damage output is significantly higher but they cannot sustain long-term battles. Their aim is to get in, deal damage, and get out. In some cases, getting out becomes optional. It can be advantageous to get into an encounter and kill multiple heroes then perish. Their primary objective is to deal as much damage as possible which means surviving is optional. This group is almost the smallest group, with 10 heroes.

Ranged Assassin

Ranged Assassin

Similar to their melee counterparts, Ranged Assassins specialize in high damage output with relatively low survivability. The additional feature that all of these heroes have is that they deal their damage from the relative safety of distance. These heroes mainly attack other heroes using ranged attacks or magic. This group is by far the largest group, this is largely due to the design possibilities of ranged characters. There are 30 ranged assassins.

Support

The role of support is probably the hardest to define. This used to be merged with healers but eventually, Blizzard has made a distinction between these heroes and Healer heroes. The support category of healers belongs to heroes that provide excellent utility while not necessarily healing. This is the smallest group with only 4 heroes contained within.

Healer

The healer role is a role dedicated to restoring the health and/or shielding teammates. In some cases the heroes within this role can also provide additional bonuses to their teammates like speed boosts, attack speed boosts, or entirely transport the teammates to a new location. There are 16 healer heroes in the game at the moment, providing a large variety of useful methods for helping teammates.

The Best of Each Role

Top 2 Tanks

Johanna

Johanna
  • Diablo Hero
  • Tank
  • Specializes in shielding and avoiding crowd control.

Her specialty is using her shields and other abilities to avoid crowd control and avoid dying. She has been selected as the best tank hero because of her incredible ability to survive combat. She has a self-heal, a shield, a skill that saves her life with another shield, and an ability to remove and prevent crowd control. Does that sound like a lot of abilities related to survivability? Well, it is!

In addition to her survival skills, she can use her other abilities to wave clear relatively fast. This gives her incredible potential in a lane by herself or among allies in team fights. Give her a try and you won’t regret it!

Anub’arak

  • Warcraft Hero
  • Tank
  • Specializes in shielding and chasing fleeing enemies.

A giant scarab from the Warcraft franchise named Anub’arak is our second pick for best tank hero. What Johanna lacks in mobility, Anub’arak makes up for in spades. Anub’arak has heavy shielding and self-healing similar to Johanna, however, he has incredible mobility in the form of a dash. This dash, upon arriving at the destination stuns enemy heroes, making it incredibly useful for chasing enemy heroes. He has additional abilities that can stun an entire group of enemies and even cocoon one of them for up to 7 seconds. Locking an enemy hero out of combat, unable to help their team in any way, for 7 seconds is why Anub’arak beats all of the other tanks. He might not look appealing, but his skillset allows for a lot of flexibility and survivability.

Top 2 Bruisers

Dehaka

Dehaka 1
  • Starcraft Hero
  • Bruiser
  • Specializes in restoring health, abducting enemies, and global presence.

Dehaka is a clear pick for top Bruiser. He has so much survivability its shocking he is not classified as a tank. Dehaka’s main abilities allow him to regain health in huge increments and avoid damage entirely by burrowing underground. If he is built correctly, he can move while being immune to damage and heal at the same time. Doesn’t that sound incredible for escaping a fight and ensuring survival?

In addition to his tanky nature, he has an ability that is incredibly useful in many circumstances. He can use his tongue to grab hold of an enemy hero and drag them towards danger. This can be used to pull enemy heroes into your own turrets or into a group of teammates waiting to capitalize on such a maneuver. Lots of fun can be had with Dehaka, give him a try!

Ragnaros

  • Warcraft Hero
  • Bruiser
  • Specializes in massive global siege damage and consistent AOE teamfight damage.

From the fiery depths of Warcraft’s Molten Core comes Ragnaros. This hero has incredible potential for damage. Firstly, he has an ability that allows him to send a torrent of lava down any lane he wants, and later, it can be upgraded to be sent down two lanes. This allows Ragnaros to remotely clear an entire lane without lifting a finger. As you can imagine, this leads to Ragnaros players racking up very high siege damage numbers, especially in a map with three lanes.

He’s not a slouch when it comes to PVP combat either. He can be built in different ways, but by far the best damage build would involve upgrading his meteor. This meteor ability has the potential to hit each enemy hero on the enemy team multiple times and then explode as well, causing huge damage. It takes some time to practice predicting where to send the meteor but even with mediocre aim, Ragnaros contributes an enormous amount to the team.

Top 2 Melee Assassins

Zeratul

Zeratul 1
  • Starcraft Hero
  • Melee Assassin
  • Specializes in engaging enemies and rapidly disengaging.

Zeratul is a Protoss hero joining the Nexus from Starcraft. He specializes in getting, dealing massive damage, and getting out. This usually occurs without a hitch, although it’s possible to die in between engaging and disengaging if he is crowd controlled or killed quickly. This is an overall downside to any melee assassin. The role itself necessitates getting near the targets. That being said, out of all Melee assassins, Zeratul likely has the highest chance of escaping with his life. He has an ultimate that places enemies in stasis which gives him lots of time to run. Additionally has a few ways to teleport, which keeps him hard to predict. Lastly, much like the other melee assassins we’ve picked, Zertaul can be stealthed. This allows him to move around without being able to be targeted by direct abilities Overall, great kit, and a great hero.

Samuro

  • Warcraft Hero
  • Melee Assassin
  • Specializes in stealthily sneaking up on low health targets.

Samuro is a very sneaky trickster brought to us from the Warcraft franchise. He excels in escaping from enemies pursuing him because he can create clones of himself and switch places with the clones. In addition to cloning, he can also become invisible, this allows him to sneak up on potential targets or escape from threats. His overall damage capabilities are relatively un-impressive but there is still room for quickly killing fragile targets and escaping before anyone knows what happened. His clones also give him the ability to defeat mercenary camps by himself, which is a big plus.

It’s hard to pick melee assassin characters that we recommend because they are much weaker than other roles, but at least with either Zeratul or Samuro, you won’t die as much!

Top 2 Ranged Assassins

Azmodan

Azmodan
  • Diablo Hero
  • Ranged Assassin
  • Specializes in dealing damage fairly remotely, allowing him to have a global presence.

Azmodan hails from the Diablo franchise and is one of the best picks when it comes to dealing damage from afar. He can deal damage practically from the other side of the map! This makes him a force to be reckoned with even if he’s not near your lane. He can summon additional units to appear in whichever lane he pleases and even has abilities that help him deal damage while moving. This makes it very hard for any character to get close enough for long enough to kill him. A great pick for someone who’s trying to contribute to their team without risking much.

Raynor

  • Starcraft Hero
  • Ranged Assassin
  • Specializes in dealing consistent single target damage while healing himself.

The most iconic character in Starcraft is Jim Raynor. Just as impactful as his starcraft version, Raynor deals incredible damage while being able to sustain himself with small heals and supporting aircraft. His overall kit of abilities is pretty bland, but they’re very cohesive and effective. He even comes with a passive ability that will activate when he’s in danger to restore some of his health. This is a very straightforward and easy-to-learn character who will be perfect for any newcomer to Heroes of the Storm or someone looking for excellent damage output without cumbersome combos.

Top 2 Supports

Zarya

Zarya
  • Overwatch Hero
  • Support
  • Specializes in shielding herself and her teammates while dealing excellent consistent damage.

There aren’t a lot of Overwatch heroes to pick from, and even fewer support heroes. Zarya is the best Support candidate for players seeking to win more than they lose. Zarya is an obvious first choice because of her ability to safeguard herself and her teammates. If she does these two things well, she is rewarded with increased damage output. Each time an enemy deals damage to a target shielded by Zarya, Zarya will gain charge increasing her overall damage output. She has some other abilities that can help repel or attract enemies which also can be incredibly useful.

Abathur

  • Starcraft Hero
  • Support
  • Specializes in impacting any part of the map from a massive distance. The hero with the greatest potential for global presence.

Abathur is an incredible hero from the Starcraft franchise. Partially because the gameplay he brings to the team is unlike any other hero and partially because he’s very effective. Abathurs don’t need to move or attack very often, they inhabit the body of fellow teammates or minions. This means, in most cases, Abathurs won’t die at all throughout the course of an average game. Abathur can sit back, in the safety of towers and assist his teammates by providing shielding, attack speed boosts, and even cloning his teammates to double-up on a specific hero.

An additional advantage with Abathur is that he summons his own miniature minions that can help push a lane without a hero being present. On top of that, he can choose an ultimate that allows him to spawn a relatively big creature to assist in pushing any lane he wants. This gives Abathur total dominion over each lane without having to actually be in the lane. An awesome pick for someone who’s tired of dying in combat.

Top 2 Healers

Rehgar

Rehgar
  • Warcraft Hero
  • Healer
  • Provides excellent AOE and single target healing with high mobility.

By far the most versatile Healer hero from the pool is Rehgar. He’s a Warcraft hero that can freely transform from being humanoid to wolf and back. While in wolf form he gets enhanced mobility and the potential for healing himself and regaining mana. His regular healing abilities can easily chain between allies and also offer AOE healing to all allies in range. Additionally, he gets the option between a massive heal ultimate or an ability that causes his teammates to go berserk and have increased damage output. Lastly, he has an ability that can slow down attacks or slow down fleeing enemies. All of these things and more are what makes Rehgar such a great pick, he’s mobile, can provide huge heals to single targets or lots of healing to multiple targets.

Brightwing

  • Warcraft Hero
  • Healer
  • Specializes in consistent healing and global presence.

Despite her small stature, Brightwing is a force to be reckoned with. Much like her size, her role in the Warcraft universe is also very small. That being said, she has definitely earned her role as a top Healer. Her fundamental method of healing is a passive heal that gets triggered every 4 seconds. She can expedite this delay by hitting heroes with her skill shot ability. Other than that, she has an excellent global presence because she’s able to teleport to any teammate regardless of where they are. This allows Brightwing to compensate for pressure the opponents might be putting towards teammates in trouble. Other than that, she’s very straightforward and provides consistently healing and occasional crowd control throughout the entire game. An excellent pick!

Heroes to Avoid

Lost Vikings

It’s very easy to see why the Lost Vikings should be avoided, especially for new Heroes of the Storm players. The premise of this hero, or should I say heroes, is that they are three dwarves that can be individually controlled. In fact, to get the most benefit out of them, they must be individually controlled and located in different lanes. Their main appeal as a character is to be able to soak experience from multiple lanes at once, the only downside is, it requires the player to focus on keeping them alive across two or even three lanes. The level of micromanaging that is required to play this hero is what makes it a hero to avoid until you master the basics.

Cho & Gall

Cho & Gall

Similar to Lost Vikings, these two heroes require a strange condition to be met as well. Cho & Gall are two separate Warcraft heroes, but they are attached. This means that two players need to collaborate, one player controlling the movement and the other player dealing the bulk of the damage. This is challenging for two main reasons: it requires two players to work together very well and these players have to be very good at positioning themselves on the map. You have to keep in mind that wherever Cho’Gall is, there are two players there. This means if Cho’Gall is in a sub-optimal location, his teammates will pay for it two-fold.

Murky

Warcraft’s Murky is a tricky hero to place on the tier list. On one hand, he can be deadly in a capable player’s hands. On the other hand, there are very few players that can pull it off. Murky is a character that specializes in being able to die with little consequence. Each one of his deaths only adds ¼ to the amount of a regular hero’s death. This gives murky room to be risky but ultimately is his downfall. Murky players are often too risky, and rack up too many deaths. In addition to the psychology of murky, his abilities are relatively underwhelming which doesn’t allow him to be able to defeat anyone in a one-on-one duel.

Probius

Probius, from Starcraft, is another tricky hero to position on the tier list. Probius has the potential to deal decent damage while providing vision for his teammates. If Probius is able to place two warp portals beneath an enemy and activate them with a projectile he can do decent damage very consistently. That being said, it’s hard to juggle placing his warp portals, hitting the warp portals with a projectile, placing his pylons, placing his turrets, and staying safe. Probius has a relatively low health pool which means getting caught out of position is almost certain death. That’s what makes him a hero you should avoid, you have to place all kinds of things, but at the same time, stay away from enemies. It’s a very difficult combination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Are These Placements Final?

Answer: No, due to the nature of balance updates and changes made to the game, these rankings may change in the future. Also, ranking heroes according to power level can be quite subjective, it is difficult to measure the power and effectiveness of any individual hero.

Question: Should I Only Play the S Tier Heroes?

The heroes that are in S Tier are simply the most powerful and/or easier to learn. This doesn’t mean that other heroes won’t win you the game. The ultimate goal is to find a hero you enjoy playing and play them. After all, the game is primarily about having fun!

Question: Are There Any Resources you Suggest for Learning How to Play These Heroes?

Answer: While there are a variety of websites and video content available to learn the theory behind all of these characters, nothing substitutes the experience and knowledge you would gain from actually playing these heroes. If you don’t feel comfortable learning in an environment against other players you can always play against A.I. Overall, I encourage experimenting and learning the heroes by playing them in real matches.

Conclusion

It is incredibly difficult to choose my favorite hero out of the bunch listed here. They all have unique strengths and of course, play different roles on the battlefield. The main criteria I use to determine which hero I think is the strongest overall is their ability to affect the outcome of a match. In that regard, I think the ultimate hero to pick would be Raynor. He isn’t necessarily the best hero on his own, but his scaling damage and massive potential are what attracts me to him.

Raynor has the capability of dealing tremendous amounts of damage while maintaining a decent range and a full health bar. In addition to his passive advantages, his active abilities such as his Q lets him create distance for himself. This is particularly useful when he is being attacked by melee assassins who can appear suddenly.

Of course, this is merely my top pick. You will do well picking any hero from the S, A, or B tiers. Try a bunch of them out, and see for yourself which ones you prefer.
